The Signal Web Phone — Calls from Your Browser

The web phone turns a browser tab into your extension — same number, same caller ID, ringing alongside your desk phone. Nothing to install: sign in, grant microphone access, and take calls with a headset. It's the fastest path to a working phone for remote days and new hires awaiting hardware.

First use

  1. Open the web phone URL (your administrator provides it) in a current Chrome or Edge.
  2. Sign in with your portal credentials.
  3. When the browser asks, allow microphone access — the single most skipped step. Look for the mic icon in the address bar if calls connect silently.
  4. In settings, select your headset for both microphone and speaker; built-in laptop audio invites echo.

Living with it

  • Calls to your extension ring the tab (and your other devices — see multiple devices); answering in the tab stops the rest.
  • Keep the tab open; browsers throttle background tabs, so pin it.
  • Transfers, hold, and voicemail behave like the desk phone; buttons are on-screen.

When the web phone is the wrong tool

A wired desk phone still wins for all-day, call-heavy roles (front desk): dedicated hardware, PoE reliability, physical BLF keys. The web phone shines for hybrid workers, overflow, and hardware-outage fallback.

Quick fixes

  • Silent calls: microphone permission or headset selection, in that order.
  • Drops when laptop sleeps: expected — the tab must be awake to ring.
  • Corporate VPNs can degrade audio; if calls are choppy on VPN only, ask IT to split-tunnel voice.
