Transferring Calls — Announced vs. Blind Transfer

There are two ways to transfer a call: attended (you speak to the recipient first) and blind (the call goes directly). Use attended when the recipient needs context; use blind when speed matters and context doesn't. Both start with the same key.

Attended (announced) transfer

  1. Press Transfer — the caller holds automatically.
  2. Dial the extension (or any outside number) and wait for an answer.
  3. Announce the caller. To complete, press Transfer again.
  4. If the recipient declines or doesn't answer, press Cancel to return to the caller.

The caller never hears the announcement. If the transfer completes, the two are connected and you're out of the call.

Blind transfer

  1. Press Transfer, then the Blind option (label varies: Blind on Polycom, B-Transfer on Yealink).
  2. Dial the extension and press Send. The call leaves immediately.

If the target doesn't answer, the call follows their rules (usually their voicemail) — it does not come back to you. That's the trade for speed.

Transfer straight to voicemail

To hand a caller to someone's voicemail without ringing their desk: blind-transfer to the voicemail feature code plus their extension (your administrator publishes the code). Standard courtesy for "just have them leave a message" requests.

The BLF shortcut

If your phone has a BLF key for the recipient, pressing it during a call starts the transfer to them — one key instead of Transfer + dial. Front desks live on this.
