Outbound Caller ID — What Shows When Your Team Calls Out
Outbound caller ID is set per extension: each user displays one of your account's phone numbers, plus a caller ID name of up to 25 characters. Teams that answer for multiple offices can switch identities per call with one-time override star codes, without touching configuration.
How caller ID is determined
- The account has a default outbound number.
- Each extension can override it — choose any number on your account from the extension's settings.
- A one-time star code (if configured) overrides both for a single call.
The displayed number must be one you own. That is both policy and federal law — caller ID spoofing with intent to defraud is prohibited (Truth in Caller ID Act), and legitimate business use means presenting numbers that belong to your organization and answer when called back.
Caller ID name (CNAM)
The name field holds up to 25 characters including spaces — plan abbreviations ("Premier Health Boca" fits; the full legal name won't). Display of names is controlled by the receiving carrier's CNAM database lookups, so occasional stale names on the far end are normal after a change and update on the carriers' schedule, not yours.
Multi-office pattern
Give each office's main number to its staff extensions, and configure one-time override codes for the roles that return calls on behalf of other sites. Callers see the office they know, and callbacks land on the right main number — not a personal direct line.
Note: choose callback-safe numbers. Never present a number that leads to dead air; it erodes answer rates — patients and customers screen unfamiliar numbers aggressively.
