What Is Phone Auto-Provisioning and How Does It Work?
Auto-provisioning means a desk phone configures itself. When a supported phone boots, it contacts Signal's provisioning server over HTTPS, identifies itself by its MAC address, and downloads its complete configuration — SIP account, server addresses, security settings, and button layout. No one ever types credentials into a phone.
What happens when a phone boots
- The phone gets a network address by DHCP and contacts its provisioning URL.
- It requests a configuration file named after its MAC address — the twelve-character hardware identifier on the label under the phone.
- Signal returns the configuration generated from your portal settings: the assigned extension's SIP registration (TLS with media encryption by default), line keys, and feature settings.
- The phone registers to Signal's servers. The portal records Last Seen, which is how you confirm a device is online.
Why provisioning beats manual configuration
- Security — SIP passwords never appear on paper or in a tech's notes; they travel encrypted from portal to phone.
- Consistency — every phone of a model behaves identically; replacing a broken phone means entering one new MAC, not reprogramming.
- Central change control — edit a button layout in the portal, push Reload Configuration, and the phone updates.
