Adding Phone Numbers — Local, Toll-Free, and Number Strategy
New phone numbers are provisioned from the portal in minutes: choose local numbers in the area codes your customers know, or toll-free for national reach. Numbers are inexpensive relative to what they enable — per-location identities, campaign tracking, and dedicated lines for fax or conferencing.
Local vs. toll-free
Local | Toll-free | |
|---|---|---|
Signals | Community presence | National scale |
Answer rates | Higher from local callers | Lower on cold outbound |
Best for | Offices serving a geography | Support lines, national marketing |
Most multi-site organizations run a local main number per site, and optionally one toll-free umbrella number routed by menu or ZIP.
Adding a number
- Settings → Phone Numbers → Add New.
- Search by area code or pattern; select and confirm.
- Point it at a destination — a new number rings nowhere until you do.
Number strategy that pays off later
- One number per public identity — each office, each major campaign. Distinct numbers make call reporting per-source trivial.
- Keep memorability for humans — repetition and round endings (443-4000) matter more than vanity spelling in most markets.
- Don't hoard unused numbers — audit quarterly; unassigned numbers cost monthly and confuse audits. Park deliberately or release.
- Fax and conference lines get their own numbers, never shared with voice routing.
